WCHS Lady Pioneers win 12th straight
Kyra Perkins
Kyra Perkins, shown in previous action, led the Lady Pioneers with 15 points Tuesday night in Shelbyville.

The WCHS Lady Pioneers extended their winning streak to an even dozen Tuesday night in Shelbyville and won their district opener in the process.

Warren County claimed a 64-51 win behind 15 points from Kyra Perkins and 14 from Shelby Smartt.

The win improves the Lady Pioneers to 16-2 overall and 1-0 in the district.

A 24-point second quarter propelled Warren County to a comfortable 39-24 halftime lead and the Lady Pioneers were able to fend off Shelbyville from there.

Everything was clicking during the explosive second quarter. Shelby Smartt connected on two bombs from 3-point range, Mia Hobbs was 4-of-4 from the line, and Perkins was especially active around the rim as Warren County seized momentum.

The 12-game winning streak has earned the Lady Pioneers some well-deserved acclaim. They are now ranked No. 4 by Coach T and No. 10 by the Associated Press in statewide polls for Class 4A.

Warren County will face another state heavyweight this Friday at Charlie Dalton Gym when Coffee County comes to McMinnville. It will be a rare meeting of two teams both with 12-game winning streaks.

Coffee County is known for its physical, defensive-minded brand of basketball. The Lady Raiders held Warren County to 29 points when the teams last met at the end of last season. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
