Friday afternoon basketball featured the Warren County Lady Pioneers versus the Maplewood High School Panthers in The Central Magnet School Christmas Tournament in Murfreesboro. The Lady Pioneers were coming off a tough loss in Tullahoma on Tuesday night.
The Lady Pioneers were looking to get their game back on track before they resume their schedule in January. Coach Shea Panter would pour it on in the afternoon game, defeating the Lady Panthers from Maplewood, 74-22.
Brittany Myers would lead the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 17 points, followed closely by Karagan Turner with 16. All 10 Lady Pioneers listed in the lineup would score in the game.
The plan was simple for Warren County. Run, run, and when you are tired, keep running. The Lady Pioneers were off and running from the opening tip controlled by Warren County. The sharp-shooting offense played a huge part for Warren County in the first quarter. Get the ball in close if you can, draw the contact and make your free throws. The Lady Pioneers went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line just in the first quarter alone.
The Warren County defense made a huge stand early, only allowing the Lady Panthers three points in eight minutes of play, and that came from Ashlee Perkins of the Lady Panthers at the horn ending the first quarter. Maplewood was forced to call for time when Warren County jumped out to an 11-0 lead, but it only got worse from there for Maplewood.
Sometimes a team can dominate in one area of the game against their opponent, but Friday afternoon Warren County would dominate the entire floor from end to end.
The Lady Panthers fell into the running game very early on and Warren County forced turnover after turnover with no end in sight. Maplewood could not seem to find a way through the Lady Pioneer press. By halftime it was pretty much a no-win situation for Maplewood down 46-12.
Warren County would use every player on the lineup and every Lady Pioneer would be able to find points. The coaches for the Lady Panthers had no answers for the offense or the defense of the Lady Pioneers. Maplewood appeared tired and winded halfway through the third quarter, falling behind in transition and watching layups fall for Warren County. At the end of three, it was Warren County over Maplewood 57-21.
Down to their last quarter of play and it was back to business for Warren County on the defensive end. Maplewood ran completely out of gas, only scoring one point in the quarter.
