WCHS gears up for district tournament

The Warren County High School Lady Pioneers are seen as a big threat going into the District 6-AAAA Tournament as they placed second in the district, only losing to Coffee County in district play.

The district tournament will be held at Shelbyville Central High School and it begins Monday.

The Lady Pioneers will play against Shelbyville on Monday with tip-off set at 7:30 p.m. at Shelbyville Central. Warren County has beaten the Eaglettes three times, but WCHS coach Anthony Lippe pointed out Shelbyville has improved this season and most recently beat Franklin County.

In addition, Shelbyville lost to Coffee County by just 1 point, 47-46, on Feb. 7, which was Monday.

With Shelbyville holding home-court advantage by virtue of hosting the tournament, Lippe said it should be a highly competitive game.

“I’m really excited,” said WCHS senior Jaden Smartt, who wants to make a postseason run in her final season in a Lady Pioneer uniform. “I’m ready to play and I want to see how it goes.”

In the boys bracket, the Warren County Pioneers will be facing their longtime rivals, the Coffee County Red Raiders, in the first round. Coffee County beat the Pioneers three times this season.

WCHS coach Chris Sullens says he likes that his team has had a week to prepare for Coffee County and said the Pioneers are going to be confident and tough to beat in the tournament.

There’s been no secret to Warren County’s success this year. When the Pioneers score more than 55 points, they are 8-1. However, getting to 55 points is a challenge.

In Warren County’s three losses to Coffee County the Pioneers have scored, in order, 28, 38 and 46 points. Coffee County has scored 50 points in all three games.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Shelbyville Central High.
