Warren County reaches Ripken quarterfinals

Traveling over 600 miles to compete against 20 of the best baseball teams from seven states and the Bahamas, a 10-year-old, all-star squad from Warren County finished 3-2 and reached the tournament quarterfinals.The Cal Ripken Southeast Regional Tournament took place Wednesday through Sunday in New Bern, N.C. Warren County lost to the eventual tournament champion from W. Raleigh, N.C. By virtue of winning the tournament, W. Raleigh advances to the World Series in Winchester, Va., held Aug. 13-20.Warren County relied on solid defense and timely hitting to win its first three games. Warren County stumbled in a 7-6 loss to Goose Creek, S.C., before getting ousted 14-1 in the quarterfinals.“We came down here just trying to win one game and you guys won three,” coach Stacy Young told the team afterwards. “You played great and you exceeded everybody’s expectations.
