Saturday in Rhea County, the Warren County High School track teams finally got a chance to get off and running.The Pioneers and Lady Pioneers competed in the River to Ridge Invitational held in Evansville against athletes from four other schools. In the event, Warren County won four competitions – headlined by junior Samantha Howard’s performance in the shot put – took second in three others and claimed third place in nine events.Bringing back several top finishes helped first-year coach Amy Baird call the first event “a very successful day,” for her teams.With one hoist, Howard put herself among some of the top shot-putters in the state of Tennessee.Howard won the shotput competition with a throw of 37 feet, 3 inches. The throw was well past her competition, which included athletes from Lenior City, Northeast, Soddy Daisy and Rhea County.
