Three Lady Broncos named All-State

There is a reason why Boyd has been one of the best teams in the TSIAA South Division the last two seasons. The Lady Broncos are stacked with talent.

When the TSIAA released its all-state teams Thursday, Boyd was well represented. Juniors Miranda Medley, Laney Copeland and Krista Chisam were all honored, giving Boyd - which was 10-2 in conference games this year - as many representatives on the team as any school in the division (Franklin Road Christian all had three honorees).

The recognition didn't come as a shock to coach Tim Page, who knew since the summer the Lady Broncos were going to reload this season. The only question was which of his talented players would get top billing from other TSIAA coaches.

"We've been fortunate to have a lot of great players enter our program over the last 2-3 seasons and really flourish as Lady Broncos," said Page, now in his fourth season at Boyd. "This honor could've really went to any number of players - we've been a group that has mixed and matched all year to achieve success. I'm extremely happy for Miranda, Laney and Krista that other teams recognized their impact on the court."

Medley, a midseason addition after transferring from WCHS in December, didn't take long to make her mark at Boyd. The junior wing immediately morphed into one of the best shooters in the conference, knocking down 35 percent of her 3-pointers and scoring 16.6 points per game in nine conference games. Boyd outscored its opponents by a robust 239 points in the 147 minutes Medley was on the court against TSIAA teams this season.

Copeland, recently honored for reaching the 1,000-point plateau at Boyd, knocked down a team-high 27 triples in 12 conference games while averaging 14.7 points per game. She also chipped in on the boards (3.8 rebounds a game) and dished out 30 assists.

Chisam rarely made her impact on the scoreboard - scoring just 2.5 points per game in TSIAA matchups - but her presence was felt everywhere else on the court. Despite being a guard, Chisam led the team in rebounding in TSIAA games (6.1 rebounds per contest), picked pockets of opponents to pile up a team-best 3.3 steals and also racked up 30 assists while giving up a team-low 11 turnovers in 11 games.

TSIAA opponents will have to worry about the trio of guards for another season as all three Boyd stars will be back next season. They will also be guiding the Lady Broncos into the NACA tournament later this month, with action starting Feb. 28 and ending March 3.
