The highs and lows of football

There are several things I would like to address this week but I am torn. I like to try and remain positive so first I will talk about Friday night’s win versus Sequatchie County.
After watching the Pioneers record their first win of the season Friday night, the entire column could be about the hype leading up to that particular game or the emotions of the Pioneers. It would have been great to grab a comment from every one of those guys.
I have been with these guys since the season began and I have only missed one game. I have seen these guys with smiles on their faces and I have seen their faces in disbelief as the lead slips away.
From talking to people on the streets and at other events, I keep hearing the same thing over and over, “When are we going to win?”
Well maybe I won’t hear that again until next year. But the question now will be, “Can we win again?”
My answer is yes. I see no reason we can’t. These guys have battled uphill all season against several really good teams. It is such a huge confidence boost and I hope this win is not soon forgotten. What a great night for everyone in Nunley Stadium and being down on the field, seeing those guys and listening to them was great. I won’t soon forget it.
Something else I won’t soon forget is the chain gang in Sparta this past week. I have done my fair share of heckling at ball games. But I can never remember talking trash to an opposing player during a game and that is exactly what I witnessed.
I was absolutely blown away with what I heard from the gentleman after the second quarter came to a close. I use the term gentleman very loosely. The guy from the chain gang walked onto the field and was clapping his hands in the direction of a WCMS player. He proceeded to call out his number as the teams were headed into the locker rooms for halftime.
He asked him if he was taught that play in Warren County. The coaches for the Pioneers asked this man to not talk to his players and probably a lot nicer than they should have. So I started thinking how does an adult even feel like it’s OK to talk to an eighth-grade football player that way who he does not even know?
Either way I have given him more time than he deserves and we’ll finish on a high note. Back to Homecoming, I would like to congratulate all the Pioneer players and coaches on a hard-fought, well-deserved win Friday night. Now let’s go for win No. 2. Right on.
