KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee freshman point guard Lauren Avant has decided she will not return next season.

Coach Pat Summitt said Wednesday that Avant wanted to attend a smaller Division II school possibly closer to her hometown where she could continue focusing on academics.

The 5-foot-9 Memphis native struggled with an ankle injury, concussions and illness all season and played in just 19 games. She averaged 2.6 points, 1.3 rebounds and eight minutes per game.

Avant committed to Tennessee when she was 14 and was ranked among the top 30 prospects in 2010.

Summitt has signed top-rated point guard prospect Ariel Massengale to the 2011 incoming class.

Avant's decision came a day after redshirt junior center Kelley Cain decided not to return because of ongoing pain.
