The Bradley Lady Knights better figure out a way to return powerful serves if they want to entertain any hopes of beating Boyd in volleyball.

The Lady Broncos were crushing it from the service line Monday at Boyd Christian School in cruising to a victory in straight games.

Boyd won 25-20, 25-7 and 25-18 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

“It looks good when you have a strong overhead serve and we have several girls on the team who are good at that,” said Boyd coach Amanda Key. “But we also have some strong underhand servers who are very effective.”

After Boyd claimed a hard-fought win in the opening game, it was tied 4-4 in game two. That’s when Adeline Travis rattled off 7 straight service points to give the Lady Broncos an 11-4 lead.

The Lady Knights were clearly staggering and Audrey Durham did her part to finish them off. Her overhead serve could not be returned as Bradley hit it out of bounds, into the net, or didn’t hit it at all as Durham had one ace. She lifted Boyd to a 21-6 lead and an easy win in game two.

In game three, Anna Shrum used a high-velocity underhand serve to give Boyd an 11-0 lead. Travis and Anna Jones had some nice net play during the rally as Boyd seized control early.

Bradley showed some life and rallied to cut the margin to 19-13, but Boyd had too many strong players to let it slip away. Sydney Durham, Kendlee Ferrell and Sarah Woodruff were among those who came up clutch before Shrum hit the game-winner.

“We’re really excited about this season,” said coach Key. “We have some new talent and we’re looking to play to everyone’s strengths.”

Boyd plays its first road match of the season this Thursday when the Lady Broncos travel to face the Tennessee Heat at 6 p.m.
