The Irving College Lady Tigers believe in the old adage – if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
Irving College dominated the glass Monday against Boyd, using a bevy of second-chance points to beat the Lady Broncos 25-11 and remain unbeaten.
The Lady Tigers were cleaning the glass better than Windex against Boyd, using their size advantage to get multiple attempts offensively. Presley Green and Kaydence Smith were the biggest beneficiaries, with each scoring eight points on close-range shots.
Smith scored six of her points in the first quarter, when Irving College took a 13-1 lead. Ashlin Reed had all four of her points during the first-quarter run.
Cydney Perry helped Boyd win the second quarter, scoring the only four points by either team in the period. Perry sank a pair of free throws, which she followed up with a short jumper.
Perry was also a key to the team’s press, showing her mastery of the chase-down, back-tip to secure several steals and narrow the gap to 13-5 by halftime.
Irving College flipped the switch out of the locker rooms, ignited by a long jumper by Baelee Crouch. The Lady Tigers then went back to pouncing on rebounds for points, with Green scoring six points in the third.
Green’s final bucket just beat the buzzer, pushing Irving College ahead 23-7.
The Lady Tigers would protect their advantage in the fourth, moving the team to 5-0 this season. Irving College had two late points from Emily Gonzales and a free throw from Lilly Cathcart in the victory.
Perry led Boyd, which dropped to 0-5, with seven points. Raylee Vinson added four points, all coming in the fourth quarter.
Irving College will try to maintain its perfect start Thursday at Bobby Ray. Boyd played last night at Hickory Creek, with scores being unavailable at press time.
