Region play beginning for Pioneers

The Pioneers will need more from PJ Truax and the ground game Friday at Lebanon.

After two weeks of playing at home, the Pioneers will be hitting the road this week. Not only will it be the first road test for Warren County, it will also be the team's first introduction to the new-look Region 4-6A.

The Pioneers will be squaring off with Lebanon tonight, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. The Blue Devils have beaten WCHS in each fo the last two seasons, including a 28-7 decision that ended the Pioneer season in 2022.

"Region play is what really matters and that's been our message to the team this week," said coach Matt Turner. "It's a restart, and that's something we needed after last week. We can change the whole season outlook if we perform well this week."

Warren County (1-1) is coming off a disastrous second half against White County, where the Warriors outscored the Pioneers 27-0 after the break. The Pioneer offense, which had moments of brilliance in a Week 1 win over DeKalb County, was stifled and the Pioneer defense was gashed by Sparta QB Tripp Pinion.

The  offense is hoping for a bounce-back performance behind QB Alex van Vuuren, who looked healthier on the practice field this week after missing time last week due to an illness. The Pioneers are also looking for way to get Kal Latina more involved after the junior tight end scored in the team's first two games.

"He's a playmaker and those are the guys who we need to have the ball more and more. We got guys who can break the game open - we just have to execute," said Turner.

Warren County was held to just 17 yards rushing last week and has been looking for a spark in the backfield during practice this week.

Defensively, the Pioneers will be tested by Blue Devil RB Sean Heath. He had 160 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-28 win over Antioch in Week 1, though Lebanon was largely bottled up last week in a 24-14 loss to Upperman.
