WCMS left the Bulldogs licking their wounds Tuesday night after the Pioneers defeated Eastside, 44-28.
Eight different Pioneers scored, led by Chance Hunter with 11.
Christian Rogers for Eastside led all scorers with 18 points.
Rogers carried a heavy load Tuesday night but he needed help that never materialized.
The game started out reasonably close and after a constant battle at both ends WCMS led the Bulldogs after the first quarter 9-6. Hunter dropped his first five points in the opening period. He was helped by Raleigh Gilliam and Eli Kuykendall with two points each.
Rogers got no help from anyone in the opening period and the Bulldogs had to settle for six points.
The WCMS defense is relentless as the defenders get back in transition and cover the floor well. The Pioneers rotate quick enough to defend almost anything thrown at them.
In the second period, each team sped up the tempo in the highest scoring quarter of the game. Kuykendall dropped in a basket and went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. With both offenses pushing the ball up and down the floor, it did not provide much of a chance for the defense to get back and set up.
Rogers got help from Treyton Terry who let it fly from behind the 3-point line and hit his intended target. Evan Watts also scored his only two points before the half. WCMS led 24-19.
WCMS continued to distribute the ball in the third quarter and five different player found their way in close enough to get shots to fall. Keldrick Cox scored four points four WCMS in the period just out of the break.
Rogers and Terry tried to keep it close but unfortunately the Pioneers have depth and it was too much for Eastside to overcome. In the fourth quarter, the goal on the Bulldog end of the floor was closed. The entire final quarter the Bulldogs’ shots would not fall.
In the end it was too much WCMS offense for the Bulldogs and Eastside was defeated at home, 44-28.
