The Warren County High School boys tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak Thursday in Crossville in emphatic fashion. The Pioneers swept the Cumberland County Jets 9-0 to earn their first victory this season.
Warren County (1-4) came into the District 6-AAA match 0-2 in district play, but Cumberland County provided little resistance against the Pioneers. Warren County swept six sets 8-0 and won three more 8-1 to down the Jets on their home court.
Juniors Jake Hunt and Blake Basham started the day with an 8-1 win in the No. 1 doubles match against Henry Gilbert and Austin Brown. Matthew Austin and Ben Gawel followed it up with an 8-0 victory in No. 2 doubles. Daniel Campos and Chris Brown were able to duplicate the sweep in their quick No. 3 doubles match.
Needing only two singles wins to clinch their first victory, Hunt and Basham sealed the deal swiftly in singles play. Hunt topped Gilbert 8-1 in No. 1 singles while Basham earned an 8-0 victory over Tyler Boniol.
Austin and Campos earned their second wins of the day in their singles matches before coach David Dunlap gave Jack Wood and Clayton Myers a shot in the final two single sets.
Wood, a freshman, won his first career singles match 8-0 while Myers extended his individual set winning streak to three games with an 8-0 win over Reid Guthrie.
Myers was the lone winner for the Pioneers in their 8-1 loss to District 6-AAA rival Cookeville Tuesday at home.
The Pioneers will try to make it two in a row Monday when the team plays host to Cannon County at McMinnville Civic Center. Action is set to start at 3:30 p.m.
