Pioneers seek turnaround in region tourney

Walker Valley limped into its district tournament as losers of four of its last five games, but that’s when the Mustangs hit a different gear.

Walker Valley won three straight, including a 55-52 victory over Cleveland in the championship on Tuesday, to win District 5-AAAA. That win earned Walker Valley a No. 1 seed in the region tournament.

Warren County will be looking replicate some of Walker Valley’s magic when the teams meet Saturday in Cleveland in the first round of the region tournament. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Central.

Warren County enters the region tournament as a No. 4 seed.

The Pioneers (10-17) started the year with four straight victories, but have put together back-to-back wins only once since then. Warren County has lost four in a row and will be looking to produce a turnaround much like Walker Valley (21-10) did for its district-tournament run.

“We have to get back to the basics, which is scoring the basketball, not committing a lot of turnovers, and competing on every possession,” said Warren County coach Chris Sullens. “We’ve gone down there to Walker Valley and won in the region tournament before and we can do it again if we play with a common goal and play together as a team. That’s something we’ve struggled with at times this year.”

Sawyer Seymour has been Warren County’s most consistent weapon in recent games as he’s found success scoring from 3-point range. Seymour scored a combined 29 points in two district tournament games.

Kaden Rutledge, Isaiah Cummings, Nate Elrod and Eli Kuykendall are some of the other Pioneers capable of stepping up and producing on the offensive end.

A Pioneer victory on Saturday would advance Warren County to the region semifinals. After the opening round, the rest of the region tournament will be played at Coffee County Central High School.

Warren County would play Tuesday night with a win. A loss ends the season.
