It's been an up-and-down season for the Pioneers, but the squad may be turning the corner at the perfect time. Warren County closed last week by winning three of its last four games, including taking down Cumberland County 7-0 and Sparta 22-7 on back-to-back nights.
Things were already looking up for the Pioneers when they topped Spring Hill Tuesday 3-2 for their first District 9-4A win and it only got better when they made quick trips to Crossville and Sparta Thursday and Friday, respectively.
Senior Alex Tallent threw an absolute gem against the Jets, allowing just two hits to record just the second shutout of the season for the Pioneers.
He got back up from Baler Melton, who dazzled at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance and two RBIs, and Easton Denning's two-hit, two-RBI game.
Denning saved his best for Sparta though. The powerful lefty destroyed the ball against the Warriors, highlighted by hitting a two-run missile out over centerfield in the second. It helped spot Warren County a 6-0 advantage early.
The Pioneers broke away in the sixth, sending 13 runners across the plate to secure the run-rule win. Freshman Ryder Gillespie highlighted the frame with a two-run double, while T-Bone Adams roped a RBI triple and Denning, Melton, Aiden Miller and Jaytton Baker had RBI singles. Warren County also plated five runs on free passes in the seventh.
Hayven Jones earned the win, going four innings and striking out six. Alex van Vuuren pitched the final two frames and struck out two.
