Diamonds are created through enormous pressure. Coach Trice Powers may have found some new jewels on his roster following Tuesday’s deciding district tournament game.
Warren County downed White County 7-1 in the third game of a best-of-three series at Patrick Ramsey Field, securing its third straight region bid.
Junior Trace Adcock didn’t allow a hit in four innings of work to earn the victory, while Heath Kuykendall, Westin Wilson and Braden Bottoms all stepped up with RBI hits in the pressure-packed matchup with the Warriors.
“When guys go down, you either sink or guys are going to rise to the occasion,” said Powers. “The kids are rising. Trace has thrown well all year, we just haven’t had him in spots like this. He showed what he’s been doing.”
Adcock was able to keep the Warriors off the board through four innings, with a big assist from left fielder Ethan Smith.
The senior made the defensive play of the game, hosing a White County runner at home in the fourth to complete an inning-ending double play.
Smith also was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, coming in the sixth inning when Warren County put the game away with five runs.
Dylan Ward capped the late rally with a two-run double, spinning around the White County centerfielder on a long shot to the fence.
Bottoms locked down the victory, pitching the final three innings and striking out three. His last two Ks came back-to-back to end the game.
Warren County will face Soddy Daisy in the region semifinals Monday. More information on the region tilt will follow in Sunday’s Standard.
