Pioneers advance to region tournament
Ryland Holder and Wyatt Wilson Embracing 5-8 HR Hitters.jpg
WCHS Pioneer baseball teammates look on as two home run hitters embrace. Ryland Holder and Wyatt Wilson both hit home runs Saturday at Stone Memorial.

The WCHS Pioneer baseball team beat Stone Memorial Saturday 6-3 in an extra eighth inning in Crossville.

The victory completed back-to-back wins against the Panthers to advance Warren County to the district championship against Cookeville.

By virtue of reaching the district championship game, both the Pioneers and Cavaliers will advance to the region tournament, with the winner advancing as the No. 1 seed that includes a home game.

John Garrett pitched all eight innings and he was very efficient on the mound. Garrett made only 62 pitches in the game. Garrett was helped by two home runs, one each by Ryland Holder and Wyatt Wilson. The game was scoreless for the first three innings, and Ryland Holder led off the top of the fourth with a solo shot that gave Warren County a 1-0 lead.

The game was tied 3-3 going into the eighth. At the top of the inning, Ty Martin knocked in Jace Brantley with a double, and Wyatt Wilson knocked in Ty Martin for a 2-run homer in the same inning that gave Warren County a 6-3 lead.

Garrett pitched the bottom of the eighth and his infield backed him up by successfully defending three infield ground balls to end the game.

The district championship was played Tuesday. Check the Southern Standard’s online platforms for the latest scores.
