The WCMS cross country team held its first 5K race over the weekend at Nunley Stadium to help with funds to support the team.
The Pioneer 5K saw 20 competitors from around Warren County in its inaugural race, including Blaine Wilcher, WCMS athletic director Betsy McBride, and Scott Holmes, just to name a few.
The race raised $300 the day of the race. With donations and pre-ordering shirts, the race raised a grand total of $600 to help with travel expenses.
“I was really happy with the turnout we had during the race,” said WCMS cross country coach Patty Kelly. “The community really helped the team out a lot and provided several great prizes for the winners and we’re very appreciative.”
On if the 5K will be an annual event for the team Kelly added, “I want to make this a yearly thing for the community. The course is mapped out perfectly but there will have to be some tweaks made for next year’s race. Overall there was a lot of positive feedback about the race that is why I want to make it a yearly event.”
The top six competitors in the race were recognized.
Wilcher finished the race in first place with a time of 23 minutes. Jorge Vazquez finished with a time of 25:14, while Walt Jones rounded out the top three with a time of 25:15.
Jorge Vazquez Sr. finished fourth with a time of 26:32. Edgar Diaz finished fifth with a time of 27:06 and Alec Smith finished with a time of 28:57 to complete the grand prize winners.
The cross country team will compete in its first invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at WCHS.
