Tara Koran can cross off one thing from her Christmas list. Her WCMS Lady Pioneers gave her a win right before the holidays.
Riding a season-high 22 points from Kyra Perkins, the Lady Pioneers topped Franklin South 63-42 Monday at home.
Warren County (6-6) exploded for a season high in points, much to the delight of their second-year head coach.
“After halftime, I felt like we came out and played to our potential and dictated the game from that point,” said Koran. “I thought all my players started seeing the floor and making smart passes. It was definitely a team win.”
The Lady Pioneers used a balanced attack to build a lead in the first half. Sable Winfree’s late three-point play pushed Warren County ahead 20-11 after the first quarter.
Bella Bain did some heavy lifting in the paint, scoring all of her eight points before the break as Warren County built a 33-26 advantage.
Perkins went to work once the second half started. Held to just four points in the first half, the shooting guard showed she could score in bunches against Franklin South.
Perkins outscored the Lady Trojans on her own in the second half, going for 18 points while the visitors only tallied 16 after the break. Perkins scored in every fashion, attacking the rim for layups, pulling up for jumpers and firing from long range.
Perkins concluded her onslaught with a late dagger 3-pointer, pushing the Lady Pioneers to a 20-point advantage.
“Kyra has had two really good back-to-back games,” said Koran. “She’s making good decisions and her teammates are finding her when she’s open.”
Emeri Cummings matched Bain with eight points, while Jaycie Hodges scored six. Sable Winfree finished with five points, followed by her sister Savannah Winfree with four. Alexxia Verge and Paige Sweeton also finished with four points, while Kinslee Grissom rounded out the scoring with two.
Warren County traveled to Oakland Tuesday night to participate in a Christmas tournament. Koran is hopeful the team will sustain its momentum, having now won three of its last four games.
“These girls are improving each game. They are hard workers and I love coaching them,” said Koran.
The results from Tuesday’s action were unavailable at press time.
