Traditional Fourth of July race draws 148 competitors

Racers take off promptly at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to kick off the Fourth of July festivities in downtown McMinnville during the Stars and Stripes Fun Run.
Strike up the band, the gang’s all here … for the Stars and Stripes Fun Run that is, a Fourth of July favorite since 1981.Sponsored by the Rotary Club of McMinnville, Dr Pepper Bottling Co., First National Bank and Security Federal Savings Bank in conjunction with the McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department, 148 participates lined up to run or walk the 5K race or the children’s 1-mile run. The children’s run was started last year and due to popular demand, race officials are planning on keeping it in the lineup for years to come.The Gold and Silver Band, which is reported to be the oldest continuously operating community band in the state, was on hand as well and began the festivities with some live music after the race finished beginning another McMinnville Fourth of July celebration.Finishing first overall was Ben Myers with a time of 18:58.“I had to win this race in the middle,” said Myers, who is 40. “Youth isn’t on my side anymore.
