Get stretched out and ready to run. The second Patriot Half Marathon and 5K is set for Saturday, March 21.

The race was launched last year as a way to raise money for local veterans in need of a helping hand.

“People will come to our post and ask for help with a car expense or a medical bill,” said VFW representative Mike Menth. “This race supports our emergency fund and we’ll distribute those funds as they’re needed.”

The 13.1-mile half marathon will start at Wild Bill’s BBQ, formerly the VFW, at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $45. Professional timing will be provided by A Matter of Timing and all finishers will receive a medal.

The 5K race will start at the old U.S. Equipment facility at 3756 Sparta Highway. Start time is 9:30 a.m. Both races will finish at the old VFW. All entrants will receive a race shirt.

Mickey Ralph won the inaugural half marathon.

Long-distance runner Rhonda Galligan is assisting with race organization. She has arranged for a L-3 Grasshopper Aeronca owned by Jim Tate to conduct a flyover before the half marathon. This airplane was described as the most feared airplane of World War II because the enemy could expect heavy fire from this airplane.
