It’s district tournament time and the WCHS Lady Pioneer softball team is thinking repeat.
The Lady Pioneers finished the regular season at home Thursday night by pushing aside Stone Memorial for a 13-0 victory.
The win gives Warren County a 6-2 district record, good for the No. 2 tournament seed. Cookeville finished 8-0 in district and holds the No. 1 spot.
“Our pitching has been good all year,” said WCHS coach Gooby Martin. “What we need is hitting up and down the lineup, 1 thru 9. Some days the top of the lineup hits good. Other days it’s the bottom of the lineup. We need everybody hitting good at the same time.”
The Lady Pioneers had their bats energized Thursday in the first inning against Stone Memorial, scoring eight runs. That would be all the offense necessary for lights-out pitcher Maddie Cantrell, who went the distance.
Cantrell struck out two and allowed three hits in pitching the five-inning shutout.
From the plate, Grace Rains had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Elia Atterson, Rhealee Johnson, and Ashton Whiles also had 2 hits each.
After starting the season 6-6, the Lady Pioneers have body slammed their opponents, winning 10 of their last 12. They will look to maintain their momentum this Thursday against Rhea County in the first round of the district tournament. All tournament games will be played in Cookeville.
Only the top two teams from each district advance, so the Lady Pioneers will need to beat Rhea County to reach the region tournament. The Lady Pioneers are the defending district tournament champs.
