It didn’t take long for a local all-star team to make its mark at a state level.
Last weekend, the 7-9 girls all-star team from McMinnville finished second in the TYBA state tournament. The impressive finish came just a month after the team was formed.
“This was our first tournament together,” said Jeff Chisam, one of four coaches, joining Terry Denning, Jason Campbell and Adam Wanamaker. “We have been practicing for about four weeks. I knew we had a solid team, but I didn’t expect to be as good as we showed.”
The group, featuring 12 players who played in the McMinnville Youth Baseball and Softball leagues, meshed quickly. The local stars, carried by a tenacious defense, went undefeated through pool play on Friday and Saturday at Barfield Crescent Park in Murfreesboro.
Included in the victories was an opening 16-0 victory over the Lascassas Venom on Friday and back-to-back wins over the Unionville Dirt Dobbers, 16-0, and Dirt Divas, 7-5, Saturday.
“We pulled the upset against the Dirt Divas. They’re a very good travel team from all over the state,” said Chisam.
When the tournament began Sunday, the local squad kept rolling with a 21-3 victory against Unionville. The blowout set up a championship tussle with the Dirt Divas, who came back to win the rematch 17-6 for the state title.
Although the team came up a game short, Chisam felt the squad earned the respect of the teams in the tournament.
“All the other teams were talking about us and the talent we had on the field. They could not believe we were a recreational team from Warren County playing our first tournament together,” said Chisam.
Members of the team are Willa Denning, Cortlyn Porter, Alyssa Boyd, Naveah Duggin, Izzy Pitts, Maci McBride, Kaydence Wiser, Chloe Wanamaker, Ali Young, Bella Campbell, Ashlynn Graves and Brynlee Chisam.
