The WCMS Lady Pioneer basketball team is hitting its stride at just the right time.
The Lady Pioneers won Monday night in the first round of the sectional tournament to inch just two wins away from the state tournament.
WCMS beat Page 42-33 behind 16 points from Maci McBride in a game played at Stewarts Creek.
“Page is a really good team but we outworked them and we outhustled them,” said WCMS coach Mendy Stotts. “We played a great game. We let them get up 6-2 early but we were able to come back. We scored 8 points right off the bat in the third quarter to really get going.”
Addison Steakley added 10 points for WCMS.
The Lady Pioneers advance to play Blackman on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Stewarts Creek. Blackman is the No. 1 seed in the Murfreesboro area.
“It’s do or die from here on out,” said Stotts. “We have to win to keep playing.”
Stotts said the Lady Pioneer press was effective in creating turnovers and generating offense for WCMS. It was tied 14-14 at halftime before the Lady Pioneers began to gain separation in the third.
