With apologies to Charles Dickens, the Warren County High School soccer team had to go through the worst of times before enjoying the best of times.Although Warren County was defeated 5-4 by the McMinn County Lady Cherokees in a scrimmage Friday, the Lady Pioneers left the field with their heads held high.A flurry of four goals in a 20-minute third period by the varsity team showed why Warren County will enter the 2012 season as the favorites in District 6-AAA.Friday’s scrimmage was broken down into three 20-minute periods. The first saw both teams go scoreless, though the Lady Cherokees dominated action as Warren County came out sluggish.Coach Todd Willmore inserted his junior varsity team in the second period and things went south. McMinn County was able to score four goals in the second period as the young Lady Pioneers had trouble possessing the ball against the speed of the Lady Cherokees.When the third and final period started, it was the Lady Pioneers’ turn to take advantage of a tired McMinn County team.Reigning District 6-AAA player of the year Morgan McCormick scored two goals in the third period, including sneaking in a score right before the final whistle blew.Senior Lauren Roller added a goal, as did junior Ansley Mullican.
