Lady Pioneer sophomore Shelby Smartt plays tough defense Tuesday in a home matchup against White County.

According to the AP Tennessee Girl’s Prep Poll, the WCHS Lady Pioneer basketball team’s two district opponents this week are among the best in the state.
Tuesday’s opponent, White County, is ranked just below the top 10, and tonight’s opponent, Stone Memorial is ranked No. 2 in the state 3A classification. The week started at home against White County and the Lady Pioneers lost 83-47.
WCHS coach Anthony Lippe said, “Our girls played hard against a top team in the state. We played very well in the second and third quarters. We just struggled to start and finish the game. Sparta shot the ball extremely well. Overall there were things that we can build off of from that game. We have a young backcourt but we are learning and getting better each game.”
White County jumped out to a 7-0 lead and was up by 13 points at the end of the first quarter. The Warriorettes increased that lead to 19 points at halftime. Seven of White County’s 15 3-pointers came in the first half. It was an impressive first half by the visitors from Sparta as they racked up 45 points.
Warren County had a tough time against a tall, sharp-shooting team which likes to trap on defense. There were some bright spots. Kam Nowlin had a 3-point basket as did Kyra Perkins, Mia Hobbs and Shelby Smartt. The freshman, Sable Winfree, had two 3-pointers.
Winfree reflected on the game the next day. Winfree said, “We are not as experienced as them. We have one senior starter. The rest of us are juniors and a freshman. I have never lost by that many points, ever. They were really tall and trapped us. Now we know how to play against them.”
Top scorers for Warren County were Erica Cantrell with 10 points and Shelby Smartt with 7.
Gracie Dodgen led White County in scoring with 24 points and Morgan Quick contributed 15 points for the Warriorettes.
The Lady Pioneers were in Woodbury last night against Cannon County. They play at home tonight against Stone Memorial, and tomorrow afternoon they host Franklin County at the Dalt. Home games are live on Warren County’s YouTube channel.
