Lady Pioneers edge Cookeville

The top of the batting order was very productive for the Lady Pioneers on Tuesday night in a game where Warren County needed every hit and run it could produce to win, 8-7.

The Lady Pioneers had beaten Cookeville 10-0 and 19-2 in the regular season, but the Cookeville team which showed up Tuesday night was a different story.

Shelby Roberts, the WCHS lead-off batter, continues to hit with a high average and produce runs. Roberts had 2 hits and 1 RBI. Elia Atterson, hitting second in the order, was very effective with 2 hits and 3 RBIs.

The Lady Cavs mustered 5 more hits than Warren County, but suffered 4 errors in the field.

The win kept Warren County in the winners’ bracket of the district tournament and the Lady Pioneers played the next night against a surprisingly tough Rhea County team.

WCHS coach Gooby Martin said, “It was a good game. Both teams played really well. This is tournament softball. There are no easy games. We survived against Cookeville and got the win.”

Shelby Roberts 2, Elia Atterson 2, Madison Hollis 1, Sadie Simmons 1 and Alyssa Mosley 1. Producing RBIs were Elia Atterson 3, Madison Hollis 2, Rhealee Johnson 1 and Shelby Roberts 1.

Madison Hollis went the distance and had 5 strikeouts and gave up 12 hits and 7 earned runs.
