Lady Pioneers champs again

The WCHS Lady Pioneer basketball team rang in the new year in Florida by winning its bracket in the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational on New Year’s Day.

The Lady Pioneers trounced Braydon River, Fla., 77-29, on Saturday to win their 10th straight and finish the tournament 3-0.

It marked the second tournament the Lady Pioneers won in 11 days. They won the Sonic Shootout in Sparta on Dec. 22.

The Warren County girls made it through the entire month of December without suffering a loss to improve to 14-2. It’s the team’s best start in 23 years. The last loss for the Lady Pioneers was on Nov. 30.

High-flying Warren County didn’t find much competition in Florida, winning all of its games by at least 40 points. Kyra Perkins was named MVP of the eight-team bracket.

It was a tight championship game early until the Lady Pioneers exploded for 30 points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach before halftime. Perkins scored 14 points in the quarter and Sable Winfree added 9.

Perkins led the Lady Pioneers with 25 points, Sable Winfree scored 17, and Brienne Kelsey scored 14, including four 3-pointers. Kelsey has had the hot hand from 3-point land in recent games.

Warren County won its three games in Tampa by an average score of 69-22. The Lady Pioneers earned a 57-17 win over Newsome High School of Florida in the bracket semifinals on Friday to advance to the finals on Saturday.
