Lady Eagles top Boyd

Lia Wright works through the Lady Bronco defense and finds an opening to pass the ball to her teammate. Wright unloaded 21 points in the win over Boyd to secure a spot for Morrison in the second round.

The Morrison Lady Eagles took flight and soared far above and beyond the Boyd Lady Broncos in a convincing 42-14 win during the first round of the 5-6 grade postseason tournament.
The Lady Broncos never settled into a rhythm against the Lady Eagles. Once Morrison took off there was no coming back down and the Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Broncos, 42-14.
Nothing could stop Lady Eagle Lia Wright. Wright had her way with the Lady Bronco defense and she unloaded a game-high 21 points. Boyd did not have an answer for Wright and the Lady Eagle offense.
In the first quarter, Morrison and its mildly aggressive defense blanked the Lady Bronco offense. No matter where Boyd shot the ball, nothing would fall.
It was quite the opposite on the Lady Eagle end of the floor. At times through the opening period, Morrison looked like it could do no wrong. Wright led Morrison with eight of her 21 in the first. She pounded the ball inside and worked hard through the defense and found ways to get to the basket. Lexie Whipple knocked down a pair of free throws in the first and Morrison opened the game with a 13-0 lead.
The second quarter was almost a mirror image of the first. Morrison did not adjust or make any changes. Wright worked the ball inside and forced the defense to collapse. Wright buried a deep 3-point shot and she added nine points to her eight-point first quarter.
Whipple knocked down a pair of shots in the second along with Mika Vega, who gathered a rebound and got her putback to fall.
The soul source of offense for the Lady Broncos in the second quarter was three free throws from Alaina Stiles. Morrison’s defense did not give up anything easy inside and the Lady Eagle defense focused much of their attention on Stiles. By the time the two teams made it to the half, Morrison led 28-3.
In the third quarter, Morrison kept up its agenda and its pursuit of the ball. The Lady Eagles kept the floor covered and pressured the ball. Stiles found her way inside and she carried a heavy load in the third and supplied Boyd with an additional five points. It was not until the fourth quarter that any other Lady Bronco scored besides Stiles.
The Morrison offense slowed slightly and pulled the full-court press back in the third. Wright added her final four points to her total in the third and remained seated throughout the fourth. Lakelyn Ross picked up six points in the second half of play and Jessica Alvarez added two in the big win over Boyd.
In the fourth, Stiles added her final four points and Anna Jones scored her only two points in the final period. Morrison completely dominated the game and the Lady Eagles soared to a 42-14 win over the Lady Broncos to advance to the second round.
