Anna Jones didn’t beat Covenant on her own. She at least needed somebody to pass the ball in before she could dominate.
The Boyd post had a huge game in the local matchup, scoring 22 points as the Lady Broncos defeated Covenant 55-23 on the road.
Boyd (4-3) routinely fed Jones down low and the Lady Lions couldn’t find a way to stop it. Jones bullied her way to layups or went to the line when Covenant was forced to foul. Jones connected on 10-of-14 free throws, nearly fouling out the Lady Lion frontcourt on her own.
Kapri Talley and Zoe Witty scored 15 and 10 points, respectively, to aid Jones in the matchup. Talley and Witty benefitted from the attention Jones was drawing inside, regularly getting open looks from deep. Witty sank a pair of 3-pointers, while Talley got rolling in the second half, scoring 13 points after the break as Boyd enacted the mercy rule.
Covenant (1-4) never seemed to find its groove offensively. Madisen Madewell, who scored nine points, and Erica Clay hit early jumpers, but it was followed by a prolonged cold spell as Boyd built a double-digit lead.
The deficit only grew in the second half once Talley started adding a second option to Jones dominating the paint.
By the fourth quarter, Boyd had built a 30-point lead and the clock ran continuously.
Sarah Woodruff added eight points as Boyd completed the season sweep of Covenant.
The Lady Lions got four points from Clay and Lanya Byars, while Sarah Sharpe, Savannah Duggin and Jaelin Stovall scored two points each.
It was a bounce-back win for Boyd, which had lost its previous three games, including a 65-24 loss on the road Monday at Riverside Christian.
Boyd will be back in action Monday on the road at Webb while Covenant takes the court against Tuesday at Lancaster Christian.
