Lady Broncos race in with 31st win
basketball

The Boyd Lady Broncos earned their 31st win Saturday in Jasper, jumping out to an early lead and holding on against a quick Marion County team, 60-53.

The win allows Boyd to finish its best regular season in school history with a 31-2 record. The team stretches its winning streak to 16 straight and hasn’t lost in 2022.

The Lady Broncos started postseason play Tuesday night at home with results not available at press time. Check www.southernstandard.com and click on the “Scoreboard” tab on the homepage for all the latest scores.

The difference against Marion County was the first quarter where Boyd point guard Laney Copeland hit three 3-pointers on her way to scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points. The Lady Broncos were up 20-10 after the first quarter and Marion County was never able to catch up.

It was an even game the rest of the way as Marion County made a determined effort to keep Copeland off the scoreboard with a box-and-1 defense.

Boyd coach Tim Page countered by pulling Copeland way out to the top of the key, essentially taking Marion County’s best defender out of the picture and allowing a 4-on-4 matchup with the rest of the players.

Lia Wright scored 7 big points for Boyd in the fourth quarter. Krista Chisam had a strong all-around game for Boyd with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.
