Monday night would start the 7-8 grade regular season basketball schedule. Up first for the Centertown Lady Warriors would be the Lady Tigers from Irving College. It would be the first game since playing in the preseason Ruritan Tournament three weeks ago in Morrison.
Monday night did not go well for the Lady Warriors as the Lady Tigers would have their way in Centertown, winning over the Lady Warriors 43-14.
Caylie Sherrell would unload a game-high 23 points for Irving College in Monday night’s win over Centertown.
Both teams got out to a shaky start with handling the ball and shot selection. The Lady Warrior passing game was not on point after turning the ball over the first few trips down the floor and if the pass was there, the recipient of the pass was unable to find the handle. The Lady Tigers would strike first about halfway through the first quarter with a basket from close range.
It would be the defense, or lack thereof, that would be the downfall of the Lady Warriors as they were very slow to react to open jump shots and struggled to get in position for rebounds.
Macie Walker would provide the offense for the Lady Warriors in the first quarter. While Drew Davis would connect on two free throws for Centertown. Irving College would have a 11-4 lead at the end of one, leaving the Lady Warriors some work to do in the remaining three quarters.
Coming out in the second quarter, Irving College continued to get wide-open looks at the basket, while also getting the ball in close. Transition points by the Lady Tigers would also be crucial in the second quarter. Centertown was still having trouble getting the ball across the half-court line against the Lady Tiger pressure defense. Emily Fults would help with scoring for Irving College in the second if Sherrell was found covered on the offensive end.
Page Duke and Davis again would add to the point total for a much better scoring second quarter for the Lady Warriors. Offensive rebounding hurt the first half for Centertown most trips down the floor resulting in one shot, maybe two.
At the half, the Centertown Lady Warriors were trailing 21-12 behind a Tiger offense not afraid to take the ball inside.
Coming out after the half it would be all Irving College the rest of the way. Irving College would find shots falling from four Lady Tiger players while Centertown would only score two points the entire second half.
