When the Warren County High School football coaching staff separated its team last Friday at practice in anticipation for the Boys 2 Men “Blue and White” football scrimmage Saturday night, junior Lee Carden was the first player assigned to the White team.Carden didn’t take long in making the prediction his team would win, as well as renaming his group the “Goon Squad.”When action began Saturday night, Carden backed up his bold prediction. Carden caught the first touchdown of the game, then made another big catch to set up his team’s second touchdown as the White team cruised to a 16-0 victory under the lights at Nunley Stadium Saturday night.Carden finished the 40-minute scrimmage with four catches for 64 yards, including hauling in a 16-yard touchdown on fourth-and-7 to put his team ahead for good on his team’s first possession.Though Carden did plenty to back up his prediction, the play of fellow junior Hunter Mullican also had a big influence on the White team winning with ease.Mullican put away any lingering doubts on who will be the starting quarterback when the Pioneers start the season Friday, Aug. 17 in DeKalb County.Mullican finished the game 6-for-8 for 83 yards, with the touchdown pass to Carden being one of two highlights the pair combined for in the scrimmage. Mullican also added 35 yards on five carries, including scoring on a two-yard scramble on fourth-and-goal.Overall, the performance by the Pioneers was very pleasing to head coach Tommy Johnson.“I thought the offense showed us what we wanted to see with the ability to control the ball,” said Johnson.
