The WCMS Pioneers are surging at the perfect time.

Warren County swept Franklin North in a doubleheader Tuesday night, winning 14-1 and 7-4. The victories pushed the team’s winning streak to five games.

“I’m very proud of these boys. They’re a great group of young men,” said coach Chad Young. “As of late, we have developed three main factors that have contributed to our success – trust, team chemistry and hard-nose baseball.”

The Pioneers pounded the Gators in Tuesday’s first game, finishing with 10 hits and scoring seven runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Logan Earls highlighted the offense with an inside-the-park home run in the fifth inning, part of a two-hit, two-RBI night. JJ Jacobs also had two hits, including a single to ignite the big sixth inning.

Kayden Coates and Easton Denning added one hit and two RBIs each, while Alex van Vuuren, Jax King and Baler Melton had one hit and one RBI apiece. Brayan Holguin added a single.

Wesley Sherrell earned the victory, pitching into the fourth inning before giving way to Earls and Melton in relief. The trio combined to hold Franklin North to just four hits.

Warren County (10-6) withstood a late rally to take down the Gators in the second game.

The Pioneers led 5-0 entering the fifth, only to see Franklin North get within one on a flurry of hits. With its lead trimmed to 5-4, Warren County capitalized on an error to plate a run in the bottom of the fifth, then put the game away on an RBI groundout by van Vuuren in the sixth.

Sherrell helped the Pioneers build the lead with a two-run single in the first inning. King also had a run-scoring single in the first, when Warren County went ahead 3-0.

Coates, van Vuuren and King all finished with two hits in the second game. Sherrell, Holguin and Melton had one hit apiece.

Coates earned the victory on the mound, pitching four innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Earls and Melton pitched in relief.

Young’s gritty style seems to have finally rubbed off on his young Pioneers.

“These guys have been playing with no fear. We are crowding the plate and daring opponents to throw inside – we love getting 90 feet for free,” said Young. “We brush guys off the plate and then bust them outside. We slide hard to break up plays. It’s not dirty baseball – it is how the game is meant to be played.”

Young believes if his team can keep up its intensity, more wins will follow.

“I feel like we will be a really tough team for anyone right now. These boys deserve a championship and I think they are ready to fight to get there."
