When every other plan doesn't seem to be working on the diamond, there is always leaning on the long ball to get the job done. Highlighted by back-to-back homers from Cortlyn Porter and Kaydence Wiser, the WCMS Lady Pioneers were able to pick up bragging rights in the border battle by beating DeKalb County 10-8 Friday night.
Porter and Wiser provided the early spark to push the team out in front in the third, while Stella Dunn's clutch RBI single in the sixth broke a 7-7 tie and helped lead to the team's sixth victory.
Warren County was trailing 2-1 early when Porter ambushed the first pitch she saw in the top of the third. She sent a towering shot over the left field wall, tying the game in a hurry.
Wiser pushed her team in front four pitches later, sending a charge into a 1-2 pitch and going the opposite way for a solo blast of her own. By the time Charley Wilson slapped an RBI single later in the frame, Warren County led 4-2.
The Lady Pioneers grew their lead to a 6-2 in the fourth, getting Presley Winfree in on a wild pitch and Reese Reinitz tagging and scoring on a sac fly from Dunn.
DeKalb County responded with three runs in the fourth to get back in the game, only to see Winfree send another sac fly sailing in the fifth to score Adasah Haswell.
The Saints wouldn't go down easy though, rallying to tie the game at 7-7 entering the sixth with a two-out rally in the fifth. Warren County was able to perserve the lead by getting out of the inning on a big throw from right field to nail a runner at home.
Needing another spark, Wiser delivered again. She started the sixth with a double, then moved even closer to scoring when Brynlee Chisam smacked a shot into left field and was able to get all the way to second while Wiser held at third.
Dunn delivered the dagger on the next pitch, finding the sweet spot as she laced a shot up the middle to score Wiser.
Chisam would use her speed to make it a two-run game on a fielder's choice, then Dunn provided some extra insurance by scoring on a wild pitch as Warren County made it to double figures on the scoreboard.
Danger arose for Warren County when DeKalb County loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but Charley Wilson was cool, calm and collected in the circle when it counted.
She forced a short fly into right - one where the Saints couldn't score on a tag - for the first out. She added a second big out when she forced a grounder to third, then ended the game with a strikeout on a 3-2 count to start a huge celebration for the Lady Pioneers.
It was Wilson's fifth strikeout as she went the distance for the win, while Reinitz led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance from her lead-off spot. Haswell added two hits, inlcuding an RBI double in the second to give Warren County its first run.
The Lady Pioneers are scheduled to be back in action Monday at home against Franklin County. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
