It seems it’s never too early to get on the hardwood. Basketball will be back next week as local elementary teams start their seasons.
The preseason District 1 tournament is slated to begin Monday, Sept. 26 at Bobby Ray. The tourney will feature boys and girls teams from Bobby Ray, Boyd, Hickory Creek, Irving College and West Elementary. Boyd will be the official host of the tournament and tickets for games will be $3.50.
It will be the kickoff of the sixth grade and under year, which has been split into two districts for the last five years. Eastside, Morrison, Dibrell and Centertown make up District 2, which is still finalizing some details for its preseason tournament.
Action begins Monday with the Boyd Lady Broncos facing the Bobby Ray Lady Stars at 4:30 p.m. Other games on the first night of the tourney include the Boyd Broncos taking on the Bobby Ray Stars at 5:45 p.m. and the Irving College Lady Tigers squaring off with the West Elementary Lady Wizards at 7 p.m.
Last year’s defending champions, the Irving College Tigers and Hickory Creek Lady Hawks, will make their debuts Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., respectively. Also on Tuesday, Sept. 27, the West Elementary Wizards and Hickory Creek Hawks cap off the action with an 8:15 p.m. matchup.
The championship games are set for next Thursday and are tentatively set to begin at 6:45 p.m. Make sure to check the Standard next week for coverage of local basketball.
