The Eastside Lady Bulldogs only showed up to score for one quarter Monday night at J.K. Stanley Gymnasium, but it was enough to beat the Boyd Lady Broncos.Eastside scored 15 of its 21 points in the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-7 with a 21-19 victory over the Lady Broncos.As has been the case all season, the Lady Bulldogs strugged to score consistently, but a quarter of explosive offense helped Eastside escape with a win.After falling behind 8-2 in the first quarter, Eastside rallied to outscore Boyd 15-1 in the second period behind point guard MaKenna Mason.Mason scored nine points, including knocking down a 3-pointer from the corner to ignite the Lady Bulldog run.Mason added two driving layups after her long-range shot, then Lexi Loader and Kapri Talley hit baskets as Boyd was unable to slow down the Lady Bulldogs.By the time Talley swished two free throws, Eastside led 17-9 going into the locker rooms.Boyd battled back behind guard Saylor Hodges in the third period. Hodges weaved through the Eastside defense twice for layups, but Mason made it a scoring duel between the two star guards as she answered back with a bucket to keep the Lady Bulldogs ahead 19-13 entering the final period.The Lady Broncos got within two twice late as Hodges, Abby Bain and Jaden Vining each scored, but Talley ended up scoring the winning points as her fourth-quarter layup put Eastside up for good.Despite playing the final few seconds without Mason, who fouled out late, Eastside was able to stop Boyd’s final shot to tie and win for the second time this season.Mason finished with 11 points, followed by Talley with eight and Loader with two.Hodges matched Mason with 11 points for Boyd, while Bain finished with four. Vining and Kaylin Barrett added two points apiece as the Lady Broncos fell to 1-9.
