Only one field goal separated the Boyd Broncos and the Eastside Bulldogs in the first quarter of Monday’s 7-8 grade WCEBA tournament first-round game.
A blowout in the second and third quarters by Eastside’s offense was decisive as it scored 33 to Boyd’s 10 and was unrecoverable for the Broncos.
Eastside took an easy win, 47-20.
“I would say it’s a good win over a much-improved Boyd team,” said Eastside head coach Kevin Burnett. “I thought we were a little shaky early, but played with good energy in the second half.”
Eastside distributed the basketball well, with eight players posting points headed by Caden Beaty who scored 12 points, with Reyes Cruz just 2 points behind with 10 points.
Boyd’s leading scorer was Tyler Jakes who scored 9 points. Alex Stinson hit for 3 points while Mark Mason, Cain Buckner, Adam Pistole and Jace Oliver all scored 2 points apiece to round out Boyd’s offense.
Both teams struggled a bit from the foul line with Eastside taking the statistical lead hitting 5-of-11 for 45 percent. Boyd Christian shot 2-of-6 for 33 percent.
Adding to the Bulldogs winning points were Charlie Moore with 8 points, Alex Jones 5, Ethan Vanderveer and Dylan Partain 4 points each and Samuel Davidson and Alec Hobbs both hit for 2 points apiece.
Winning their first tournament round puts Eastside up against the No. 1-seeded Centertown Warriors on Thursday at Warren County High School. Game time is 5:45 p.m.
