Dr Pepper made it a clean sweep of the Morrison coach-pitch titles Friday night.
After winning the regular season with a 9-1 record, Dr Pepper claimed the tournament championship as well, beating Signs by Genia 9-5 in the finals.
Micah Fleming, the Director’s Choice top male player, led the way on both sides of the ball, finishing with two hits while playing lock-down defense from his pitcher position. Fleming had a clutch two-run double during a five-run third inning, then closed the middle late to preserve his team’s lead.
Fleming’s highlight defensive play came in the final inning. With his team leading by four in the fifth, Fleming stopped any chance of Signs by Genia gaining momentum by making a snow-cone catch over his shoulder.
Two quick outs later and Dr Pepper was celebrating its championship.
Along with Fleming, Lilianna Sanchez, Ayden Hernandez-Pack, Kennedy Ramsey, Malachi Burger and Elijah Wanamaker all had two hits in Dr Pepper’s victory. Sanchez and Wanamaker each had extra-base hits when Dr Pepper took the lead for good in the third inning.
Charlee Trapp and Kasen Desmarais had one hit each in the win.
Signs by Genia took an early 4-0 lead with big hitting in the first inning. Lonnie Merriman, Brantley Waldron, Maddison Ramsey – the league’s Director’s Choice top female - and Landon Bowdoin each had hits in the first inning.
Waldron and Bowdoin each finished with a team-high two hits for Signs By Genia. Karmen Harding added one hit.
