The biggest position battle of the offseason for the Pioneers is settled ... for now. Coach Tommy Johnson has tabbed senior Connor Dixon as his starting quarterback for tonight’s game against the DeKalb County Tigers (Nunley Stadium, 7 p.m.).
Dixon has been in a battle with sophomore Hunter Mullican during the offseason for the position and coach Johnson decided to go with the experience Dixon brings.
“Both guys are pretty equal and have been equal during camp,” said Johnson. “In making the decision I went with the guy who has a little more experience.”
Though Dixon has been named the starter, Warren County fans should expect to see both quarterbacks take snaps tonight. Coach Johnson will work both in to find a hot hand and Dixon won’t be given much leeway once the whistle blows.
“We’ll have a short leash at the position,” said Johnson. “We waited to see if either would separate themselves and neither did. When I weighed the decision, it came down to more game experience.”
Dixon started the first four games for the Pioneers last season and played in two other games. Dixon also started one game as a sophomore. Dixon completed 24 passes for 139 yards last year.
Mullican saw action in two games last season, playing the final quarter in a blowout loss to Shelbyville and taking over in the second quarter against Coffee County last year. Mullican completed five passes for 106 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown pass to Michael Thrower against the Red Raiders.
