Probably one of the closest games played Thursday evening was the matchup between Carbide CrossFit and Holton Industries. The first time these two teams met Holton Industries gained a 19-13 win in a somewhat close game.
Carbide CrossFit looked for redemption Thursday and got it. Carbide CrossFit outlasted Holton Industries and escaped with a 14-11 win.
In a rare three up, three down inning by Holton Industries, the door was opened up for Carbide CrossFit in the top of the first inning and that might have been the deciding factor in the three-run win.
Makayla McBride got the bottom of the first started for Carbide CrossFit with a blast through the infield for a lead-off double. Maggie Whiles pushed her around the bases with a single and Carbide CrossFit was on the scoreboard at 1-0. Lily Rains got a hold of a pitch and she blasted a shot into the outfield for a double and Whiles came around to score, 2-0. Kia’Ann King singled and scored Rains from second base for a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Holton Industries got off to a much better start than their previous inning. Isabella Pennington drove a ball deep into the outfield for a double to lead off the inning. Allie Melton singled and there were two on with no outs. Lauren Crenshaw jumped all over a pitch and when she stopped running, she had landed safely at third base. Crenshaw had cleared the bases and Pennington and Melton scored to make it a 3-2 game. After the first out, Annabella Reintz grounded to the infield and Crenshaw crossed over the plate to knot the game 3-3.
It was time Carbide CrossFit got back to work in the bottom of the second. Whiles reached base for the second times in as many innings after an out started the inning. Another quick out had Carbide CrossFit against the wall. With two outs and a runner aboard, Annabella Culwell singled up the middle and scored Whiles for a 4-3 lead. Tinzlee Tanner was next up and she reached safely just before King drove the ball deep into the gap and she was caught when she tried for a triple and ended up being tagged for the second out. Culwell and Tanner crossed the plate for a 6-3 lead just before the third out.
Lily Smith started the top of the third off with a blast to the outfield and she stretched her base hit into a double. Ely Bain ripped a shot through the defense for a stand-up double and Smith scored to make it 6-4. Holton Industries picked up the second out of the inning and then launched back-to-back singles into the grass and Bain made her way into home safely and it was 6-5. Crenshaw went deep, deep enough that she cleared the bases with a triple and Holton claimed the lead at 7-6.
Carbide CrossFit showed its tenacity when it lost the lead, the offense responded and they put the bats to work. Whiles got her bat going with a double after a lead-off first out. Rains responded with a double of her own and Whiles was on the move. She scored and the game was locked 7-7. The second out came and Tanner ripped a shot through the entire defense and she made it as far as third base and the bases were cleared when Rains scored to make it 8-7. King went on to base hit the ball and an off-target throw had her on the move. Tanner crossed the plate and King soon after for a 10-7 Carbide CrossFit lead.
Holton Industries went on a hitting spree in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Reintz and Kiera Sharpe started the inning quickly. After the first out, Smith blasted through the defense with her second double and allowed Reintz and Sharpe to cross home for a score of 10-9. Two quick outs made it look as though the inning would be over early, but Holton Industries dug down deep. Elly Bain went long distance on a double that scored Smith to lock the game at 10-10. Pennington ripped a shot for a single and Bain crossed the plate and Holton Industries reclaimed the lead at 11-10.
The pace of the game moved quick and neither team had been able to gain the upper hand until the bottom of the fourth.
Carbide CrossFit added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning by Cagle and Whiles who each singled. With two runners on and no outs Rains cleared the bases with a hard line-drive for a triple but she was tagged out as she tried to score from third for the first out. Cagle and Whiles scored to go back into the lead for the final time at 12-11.
With enough time to start a fifth inning Holton Industries picked up two quick outs and all hope seemed loss. Reintz picked the team up when she went deep for a double to warm the bats up. Unfortunately she would be left on second.
Carbide CrossFit had the chance to add a little insurance to its lead. They added two more runs with base hits by Whiles and Rains to put Carbide CrossFit in the lead for good at 14-11, ending the night and getting redemption.
