The Eastside Bulldogs had a great night on Thursday with both girls and boys 7-8 grade teams winning over the Centertown Warriors. The Eastside boys won 32-22 in a close game until the final quarter.
Eastside big man Lex Winfree was the gamehigh scorer with 14 points and took over in the fourth quarter. Winfree scored 12 points in the fourth.
Centertown was led by Lealon Arnold with 9.
Centertown took a quick 6-0 lead with Ryder Gillispie and Kayden Solomon putting up points. Eastside picked it up with Donnivian Johnson and Winfree also putting up points and tying the game with 50 seconds left in the quarter.
Johnson drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make an Eastside lead going into the second quarter. Eastside continued to widen the gap in the second quarter with Christian Munoz making a layup and a 3.
Lealon Arnold made two foul shots to keep Centertown close.
Arnold and Munoz were the only two to score that quarter for both teams. At halftime, Eastside was up 14-8, but the Warriors didn’t back down.
Things got tight in the third quarter. Arnold, Gillispie, and Solomon continued scoring for Centertown putting the pressure on the Bulldogs.
Warrior Kiptyn Medley joined the scoreboard and tied the game with a layup, 14-14, with less than two minutes left in the third. A fight for the lead led to a tie ballgame, 18-18, going into the fourth.
Immediately there was trouble for the Bulldogs as Arnold shot a 3 for the Warriors.
With the pressure intensifying for Eastside, clutch player Winfree went on a scoring streak, dominating under the goal. He put up 12 points, 10 from under the basket, in the fourth quarter which proved fatal for the Warriors.
