Boyd Christian’s Audrey Durham drives to the basket against Franklin Christian on Monday night. Durham was essential for the Lady Broncos during a 59-52 home win.

Boyd Christian School barely squeaked out a girls win against Franklin Christian Academy on Monday. The Lady Broncos and Lady Falcons stayed even through most of the game, but Boyd was able to take the upper hand in the final quarter and win at home, 59-52.

The victory improves Boyd to 16-2 on the season after a 14-0 start. The only two losses for the Lady Broncos came in a Christmas tournament in Dyersburg when the team was without two starters. Boyd hasn’t lost when at full strength.

Point guard Laney Copeland was the top scorer for Boyd with 20. Anna Jones added 15.

In the early stages, Boyd was up by a 3-pointer by Copeland when Lady Falcon Mia McLain stole the ball and made a layup. McLain would continue to be a scoring threat in the first quarter helping Franklin Christian gain the lead with another layup.

That’s when Lady Bronco Anna Jones sunk two 3-pointers in a row, pulling the Boyd back in the lead.

With Copeland, Jones and a few free throws, the Lady Broncos were double the Lady Falcons’ score by the end of the first quarter, 14-7.

The game turned very physical in the second quarter with many fouls being called and some fouls, according to the fans of both schools, not being called. Despite the aggression, Boyd was able to take a 10-point lead with Jones adding another 3 to the Lady Broncos’ score.

Slowly, however, Franklin crept closer to Boyd with two layups and a 3. In addition to some fouls, the score was 21-19 with the Broncos leading with only 2:30 left in the half.

Bad passes by the Lady Broncos allowed the Lady Falcons to tie the game, and each team would alternate who was leading for the remainder of the half with Boyd up 27-26 at the half.

Foul shots would define the third quarter for the Lady Broncos as Copeland, Audrey Durham and Lia Wright together made 9-of-11 shots. Along with the Lady Falcons making layups, both teams fought for the lead again, going back and forth.

Eventually they found themselves tied once more 38-38 with 2:45 left in the third. Copeland was fouled going up for a layup, then Franklin Christian committed a technical, allowing Copeland to score 2-of-3 foul shots. This with Jones coming back with a jump shot under the goal saw the Lady Broncos take the lead by the end of the quarter, 46-38.

The final quarter was pretty even again with the Lady Falcons scoring 14 and the Lady Broncos scoring 13. Franklin Christian’s Kayla Lee and Tayla Stovall had a good last quarter with some impressive steals and baskets, but it wasn’t enough.
