Vols defensive end Derek Barnett speaks with ESPN and other reporters who wanted to know how it feels to break Reggie Whites UT record of 32 career sacks Friday in the Franklin American Mortgage Company Music City Bowl in Nashville.
The Tennessee Vols had a great day defeating Nebraska, 38-24, in the 2016 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Friday at Nissan Stadium. Not only was it a team effort, but defensive end Derek Barnett had a great day personally. With under four minutes left to play, Barnett caught Nebraska QB Ryker Fyfe in the backfield to record his 33rd career sack setting a new record formerly held by longtime NFL standout Reggie White. It was such a big deal, UT coach Butch Jones had to call timeout to avoid a penalty call against the celebrating team.“We had to take a timeout so we didn’t get a 15-yard penalty,” said Jones “I think that shows you the respect that our football team has for Derek Barnett, and the excitement and the unselfishness of our football team, that they wanted to go celebrate with him because they knew that was a milestone. That was something very, very special.
