Warren County Middle School hosted the Algood Redskins on Monday afternoon and the Redskins brought a tenacious defense and a solid offense to the Lady Pioneers.
The Redskins defeated the Lady Pioneers 25-14 in the first game.
The Redskins weathered the storm and held on to win game two by a final score of 25-20 and gave Algood the match, 2-0.
After the Lady Pioneers dropped the first game, Reagan Whitlock pushed WCMS to an early 2-0 lead over Algood. Whitlock’s serve has been hard to handle by many defenses all season.
Mistakes in the early stages of the game by Algood kept WCMS close. The Redskins returned the ball into the net and followed that with a serve that went long. The possession went back to the Lady Pioneers and one point separated the two teams, 5-4.
WCMS lost serve and Algood served its way to the team’s first lead after a miscommunication by the Lady Pioneer defense, 6-5.
A long point turned into a defensive showdown at the net and Samantha Jennings got the better end of the deal and WCMS tied the score again at 6-6.
It only took a couple of hits for the Redskins to reclaim the lead at 7-6. The following possession turned into a long rally and each team covered the floor perfectly. Algood once again outlasted the Lady Pioneers and extended its lead to 8-6.
It was a back-and-forth and neither team budged much one way or the other. A few points were traded between the two squads and after Algood took a 14-9 lead, WCMS called timeout.
Out of the timeout, Algood gave up the next two points and WCMS refused to go away at 14-11. The next WCMS shot was long and the Redskins led 15-11.
It was then the defense started to look tired and search for answers. WCMS dug down deep and covered the court. It paid off for the Lady Pioneers at 16-13. Jennings got WCMS within two points with a serve that was not returned. A mistake by Algood cost the Redskins and the Lady Pioneers were back within one point, 17-16.
A WCMS serve was too long and a return just missed the sideline for the Lady Pioneers and the lead was back to three at 19-16.
The Redskins served the ball and it was set up to Megan Davis for the easy kill shot. WCMS trailed 19-17.
Algood extended its lead to 22-18 after the Lady Pioneer defense took a gamble on a ball thought to be out actually hit in bounds, WCMS called for timeout.
It was never close after the timeout and Algood defeated WCMS in the second of two games by a final score of 25-20.
The Lady Pioneers kept it close in the second game but had a few too many mistakes and could not get back ahead. Algood took the match 2-0.
