NASCAR rules flexible

NASCAR is constantly changing the rules in the middle of the season. Most of the changes are the result of something that happens during a race affecting safety, but when fans start screaming for a change, they listen. 
That was the case prior to the TBA 355 at the Glen last week. After the fiasco with the finish in Indianapolis a couple of weeks ago, fans let NASCAR know how displeased they were with the overtime line. 
Overtime begins if a caution is displayed before the leader of the race takes the white flag, or before the final lap has begun. NASCAR listened and made the change. The overtime line is now the start/finish line, and it will be the same at all tracks. Drivers and fans will know exactly where it will be for every race.
Another bit of news that came out last week is Kasey Khane will not drive for Hendrick Motorsports after the 2017 season. The 37-year-old Khane won the Brickyard 400 in July and will be in the field for the 2017 playoffs. He has 18 Cup series wins in 14 seasons over his career.
He began his career with Evernham Motorsports in 2004, with six wins in 2006 alone. Kahne followed that driving for Richard Petty Motorsports in 2009, two years with Red Bull Racing from 2010-2011, and the last six years with Hendrick Motorsports.
No replacement has been named for the No. 5 Chevrolet as of yet. Jimmy Johnson will be the elder statesman for Hendrick Motorsports alongside 21-year-old Chase Elliott and 24-year-old Alex Bowman, who will replace the retiring Dale Earnhardt Jr. The big question is whether Hendrick Motorsports goes with another youngster, or pick up one of the established veterans. Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch are both looking for new rides in the 2018 season.
Martin Truex Jr. continues his winning ways with a very gutsy call at Watkins Glen. As the race was coming to a close, Truex’s crew chief, Cole Pearn, told race leader Truex to let several drivers pass him in order to save fuel. 
Knowing these drivers could not finish the race without refueling, Truex slowed down enough to save enough fuel and win the race as cars he had let by had to stop for a quick splash-and-go.
“That’s so stressful to just let guys go by for the lead,” Truex said. “I’ve got so much trust in Cole. Based on our lap times, he knew what we needed to do. Hats off to him. This is a special place.”
