Don's Desk - A song for moms
Don Alexander

Okay.  So, Valentine’s Day with all of the love and cupids doing their thing is already behind us. We are in the dry spell of holidays when the next official holiday is Memorial Day in the latter part of May. Why not get a jump start and plan for Mother’s Day?

Would it not be wonderful to have a children’s song dedicated to mom or grandma for them to sing on this special day for our mothers?

Many jingles for children surround the Christmas holidays and all of us enjoy the choirs at churches and daycares. We can just feel the love and warmth spreading through those in attendance when we hear the young voices.

Which leads to the question, “Why are there no prominent children’s songs for the little ones to express their love for mother or grandmother available on this day?” Maybe ignorance of these tunes on my part should be considered, so Google went to work for me. The discovery of "Momma Said" by the Shirelles, "Mama’s Song" by Carrie Underwood, "The Best Day" by Taylor Swift and "In My Daughter’s Eyes," by Martina McBride were the most prominent titles listed.  However, if you will notice the trend, there are no songs for children to learn and sing which would express their love for dear mom.

We all know life happens and with the result, separation from momma is sometimes necessary.  It sure seems like a song for the kids to learn and sing would brighten the day and be appropriate for the whole world. Imagine the tender little voices opening up to mom on Mother’s Day expressing their joy and love to her. Whether face to face or through a communication device, the pride of the small one’s accomplishment would come through to her and be something she would talk about for days on end.

Here is where the musical talent surrounding us is being called out. Hopefully, those in the country, gospel, or other venues can collaborate and pen a tune that children can express their love for mother through on her special day. It seems like everyone would benefit.  We know the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. Would the profits pour into the coffers?

If titles will help you get started, the following are suggestions:

"Oh, My Momma"

"Don’t Pinch Me On My Cheek, Because I Have Grown"

"Watch out, Grandma.  Reindeer crossing ahead"

"May Flowers Bring Beautiful Moms and Grandmoms"

"See You at the Ballpark, Grandma"

"Mom Means Much Love"

This was my stab. Hopefully, you can do better without trying very hard.

Please help us out with a Mother’s Day song for the little ones. I know Mom will thank you. She deserves her own song!
