Melvin Eugene Maxwell, 92, of McMinnville died Monday, March 9 at NHC Healthcare.
He was born on Oct. 9, 1922 in Algood and was a certified public accountant, graduate of Tennessee Technological University, a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving his country during World War II, and received his master’s degree from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt. A member of First United Methodist Church, he chaired the Board of Trustees for a number of years. Mr. Maxwell also was a longtime member of the Warren County Board of Commissioners having a public service career that spanned 21 years; chairman of the commission’s Policy and Personnel Committee and vice chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee. He was preceded in death by his parents E.E. (Eugene) and Clara Keathley Maxwell, and brother Kenneth Maxwell.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years Virginia Cross Maxwell of McMinnville; daughter, Susan Cross Maxwell of McMinnville; sister Lillian Newport of Memphis, brothers W.F. Maxwell of McMinnville, and Freddie R. Maxwell of Algood; grandson, Jason D. Hinds of McMinnville and great-grandson Oakley Hinds. Many nieces, nephews, other family members, business associates and friends also survive.
Funeral service is 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. James C. Johnson to officiate. Rev. Bob Case and Rev. Frank Gale will assist. Interment will follow at Algood Cemetery in Algood. The Maxwell family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the parlors of McMinnville Funeral Home.
