Karen Holland Bird, 71, of Gainesville, Ga., formerly of McMinnville, went home to meet her Lord on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center with her family by her side.

She was a loving, faithful wife, devoted mother and grandmother. She was born on Sept. 27, 1948 in McMinnville to Hazel Holland and the late Roy Holland. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1968 and worked for Belk in Georgia for 25 years. She pursued a second career as a special needs educator, working 14 years in Gwinnett and Hall County Schools. After retirement, she became a Master Gardener Educator.

Karen was a faithful member of Atlanta Road church of Christ in Gainesville, where she regularly organized clothing giveaway events, served in the food pantry, taught Bible classes for children and led adult Bible study classes for women.

Karen is survived by her mother, Hazel VanSyckel of McMinnville, her husband of 46 years, Edward Bird of Gainesville, Ga., son Cameron Bird and his wife Suzanne of Houston, Texas, daughter Meghan Childers of Gainesville, Ga., grandchildren Madeleine, Christian and Charlotte Bird and Rachel and Audrey Childers, sister Phyllis Hills of McMinnville, as well as a niece, great-nieces, and a great-nephew. She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Holland and brother Raymond Holland.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, in Gainesville, Ga.
