Clarence Ralph Yates, 82, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 27.
Clarence was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Anita Yates and a son, Wade Anthony Yates. He was born in Texas and raised in Tennessee where he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft mechanic upon completion of high school. He moved to Birmingham and was employed at Hayes Aircraft for many years.
Besides providing for his family his next love was archery. He was a prolific bow hunter winning two national championships in the senior division. He owned and operated Yates Archery Shop in Woodlawn. He was a founding member of Valleydale Church of Christ that became the Helena Church of Christ. Upon his death he was a member of Clay and Chalkville Church of Christ. Clarence is survived by his son, Rick (Karen) Yates, six grandchildren; LT. CMDR Adam Yates, Laney Dominick, Amy Mills, Mary Richardson, Rachael Lord, Rita Hall, nine Great-grandchildren, two sisters; Melba Bolin, Catherine Barnes, two brothers; Robert Yates and Carl Yates, his current wife, Rosa Yates, step-son, David Shon (Brandy) Norris, two step-daughters, Shannon Norris, Lashonda Nelson, four step-grandchildren; Dylan, David, Haley, Eli, extended family and friends.
His funeral service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Deerfoot Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to the service time. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Long Cemetery in Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s.
